The Fujinon 16x70mm Waterproof, Wide Angle FMT-SX Polaris binocular is designed to have a very flat field of view. This makes it ideal for astronomical and marine observing, as stars and other objects remain sharply defined to the edge of the field. The flat field is achieved at the expense of some added geometric distortion, however. Straight vertical lines are a little more curved at the edges of the field than with conventional binoculars. This is usually of little consequence in observing, though, as there are few straight lines in space or at sea. The 4 degree field of the 16 x 70mm makes it an excellent choice for observing large deep space objects, such as the 3.5 degree wide Andromeda Galaxy, the Veil Nebula, etc.

The high magnification, brightness, and clarity of the binocular also makes long distance birding from a fixed location a positive pleasure. Mounted on a tripod with optional tripod adapter #1185 (the binocular is realistically too heavy to hand hold), this is a hard binocular to top for observing distant nesting eagles, off-shore rookeries, waders across an estuary, etc. As with any binocular, the use of both eyes to observe can reveal up to 40% more detail than one eye alone, as when using a spotting scope. Two-eye viewing is also more comfortable than one-eye squinting through the single eyepiece of a spotting scope. This makes the 16 x 70mm Fujinon a very viable alternative to a 70mm or 80mm spotting scope in many observing situations.

Usable eye relief on this model is a little limited, at 10mm, so it is not a prime candidate for those who wear eyeglasses while observing. If you don’t wear glasses, though, it’s well worth a look. Its low chromatic aberration, low astigmatism, and very flat field make it a pleasure to look through. If you need a big, high power binocular for long distance birding or astronomical observing, the 16 x 70mm Fujinon is an excellent choice.
